Roane Medical Center Volunteers Lend Helping Hands
Roane Medical Center appreciates and values the assistance of community volunteers
to help provide a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere for patients and visitors.
“On behalf of everyone at Roane Medical Center, I want to extend a huge thank you to all our volunteers,” said Elena Burns, human resources director at Roane Medical Center. “They play such a significant part in our patients’ experiences at the medical center. They can be the first face a person will see upon arrival.”
When a patient or visitor arrives at the hospital, they more than likely will encounter one of the volunteers in blue at the one of the two volunteer welcome desks at the main entrances to the medical center.
“It’s so important that patients and their families feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible, and hopefully that starts with their interaction with me and the other volunteers,” said Barb Marshall, volunteer president.
The Roane Medical Center volunteer program consists of 75 adult volunteers, who provided more than 16,000 hours of service at the hospital in 2011. Volunteer services at Roane Medical Center include greeting patients and visitors, assisting people to their appropriate destinations, delivering flowers and newspapers to patient rooms, and working in the gift shop. Volunteers may also assist departments as needed.
The volunteers’ work at Roane Medical Center not only provides physical support but also financial support. So far this year, the volunteers have raised more than $9,000 for the hospital through the gift shop, uniform sales, $5 jewelry sales, and more.
“We are so thankful for the helping hands and caring hearts of our volunteers. The support they provide everyday at our facility is a huge help to our patients and our staff,” said Gaye Jolly, president and chief administrative officer of Roane Medical Center. “We really want people to know they don’t have to travel far to lend a helping hand. There are many excellent volunteer opportunities in their own backyard.”
Roane Medical Center seeks interested candidates 18 years and older to help in volunteer services. Whether a volunteer wants to work in the gift shop or the ICU waiting room, Roane Medical Center has a place for everyone.
